Social Impact

Our Community Outreach Programmes
We empower members of these communities through educational and social development programmes, and protect the environment, which are linked to the Company’s business strategies.

Used Cooking Oil Collection Campaign
Since July 2023, PDB, in collaboration with the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK), launched a nationwide initiative to collect used cooking oil (UCO) at PETRONAS stations. This initiative reflects PDB's measurable actions toward sustainability and responsible waste management, demonstrated through our successful collection and community engagement efforts.

By September 2024, we had surpassed our FY2024 targets, collecting nearly 480,000 kg of UCO and engaging over 142,000 people, well above our goals of 300,000 kg and 60,000 lives touched. These efforts promoted proper UCO disposal, which helped reduce environmental impact while contributing to SAF production.

This initiative is part of PDB's broader sustainability journey, which aims to integrate circular economy principles while continuously evolving our approach to responsible waste management.

This programme supports the following UN SDGs:
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 13: Climate Action
Looking forward, PDB plans to expand the programme, to make participation simpler and better for customers. PDB ensures transparency and governance through third-party audits and transparent reporting in its Integrated Report, in alignment with Bursa Malaysia's standards.

Persons with Disabilities
(PWD)
In 2023, PDB partnered with ENOKU, a social enterprise focused on empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWD). This collaboration marks a key milestone in PDB's Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) journey, leading to the employment of PWD at 10 PETRONAS stations.

Building on this success, PDB is expanding this initiative by deepening its collaboration with ENOKU to integrate more PWD employees across various roles within the company. This is part of our long-term commitment to fostering an inclusive workforce, where employment opportunities are accessible to all. To support PWD employees in their roles, we offer tailored job coaching, workplace accessibility assessments and Disability Equality Training (DET) for station dealers and staff. This initiative is part of PDB's journey toward building a more inclusive work environment, ensuring continuous improvement in accessibility and inclusivity.

This programme supports the following UN SDGs:
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequality
PDB regularly monitors the progress of this programme, measuring retention rates, employee satisfaction and workplace accessibility to ensure that this initiative creates lasting positive impact.

Beach Cleaning
PDB has actively promoted waste management and recycling awareness through a beach cleaning programme, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living, local councils, recycling organisations like SWCorp and SWM Environment as well as NGOs such as Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam (KUASA).

In 2023, we completed three beach clean-ups at Pantai Teluk Yu in Langkawi, Pantai Puteri in Melaka and Pantai Pasir Panjang in Lumut, where a total of 2,571 kg of waste, including 662 kg of recyclables, was collected. These efforts raised awareness on waste management and encouraged community involvement in recycling practices.

The programme also served as an employee engagement initiative, involving over 450 participants, including PDB staff, Rakan Niaga partners, students from local colleges and schools and members of the community. Participants learned about waste segregation and supported efforts to promote a circular economy through meaningful volunteer work.

This programme supports the following UN SDGs:
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water
We plan to continue engaging more communities in waste reduction activities and further promoting environmental sustainability.
Social Enterprise Education Lab (SEEd.Lab)
SEEd.Lab, Malaysia's pioneering social incubation programme, is a collaboration between PETRONAS and Tata Consultancy Services. This initiative aims to empower Malaysians to create socially responsible enterprises, aligning with PETRONAS' commitment to sustainable development.

In 2023, PDB contributed RM191,000 to accelerate the growth of social enterprises within SEEd.Lab. Additionally, PDB contributed 406 voluntary man-hours, supporting the social venture ENOKU, which creates employment opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWD). This collaboration highlights PDB's ongoing journey toward building a socially responsible future, contributing both financially and through hands-on involvement.

This programme supports the following UN SDGs:
SDG 4: Quality Education
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SEEd.Lab remains a critical part of PDB's broader efforts to drive social innovation and its outcomes are monitored regularly to ensure that PDB's contributions align with its sustainability goals.

Past Initiatives
We also encourage participation of our employees in our CSR initiatives as it represents an opportunity for them to have a positive impact on local communities and the environment.
Water for Life
At PETRONAS Dagangan, we are committed to creating a positive impact in our operational communities. In partnership with the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS), our Water for Life initiative extends beyond providing clean water supply solutions – it is about enhancing overall living conditions.

Since 2013, we have reached 12 states, providing support to 16 villages, and positively impacting the lives of 8,650 residents. Our efforts encompass upgrading water systems, including the installation of pipes, advanced filtration systems, water tanks, and critical infrastructure.

Through this initiative, the communities we serve now enjoy reliable access to clean water, while improving their overall hygiene standards.
ROVR’s Flood Relief Aid
During recent massive floods, ROVR has proven itself as an innovative solution by providing fuel to power up 20 units of generators for 10 units of temporary water pumps.

PETRONAS Coffee Break
PETRONAS Coffee Break Campaign objective is to promote road safety awareness and remind motorists to take a break, refresh and rejuvenate. The programme is held during festive seasons including Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Kaamatan and Gawai Festivals.
PETRONAS StreetSmart
PETRONAS StreetSmart is an initiative at grassroots level which aims to promote road safety awareness to our young generation. Since its inception in 2013, the initiative has benefitted more than 5,000 students from over 35 schools nationwide. Prior to the pandemic, PETRONAS StreetSmart was conducted as a physical programme, however, in keeping with our commitment to prioritise the students’ health, safety and wellbeing, we have pivoted to virtual platform and developed a pilot programme for this format.

To further add value to this initiative, this year’s PETRONAS StreetSmart will introduce students to Design Thinking throughout the ideation process, lean prototype development and pitching stage, enabling them to develop High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).

For this year’s StreetSmart, SMK Aminuddin Baki was announced the Grand Prize winner, whilst SMK Puteri Titiwangsa clinched the first runner-up prize. The remaining three (3) finalists namely SMK Serendah, Putrajaya Presint 5(1) and SMK La Salle, Petaling Jaya, shared the second runner-up prizes.

The PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad Virtual StreetSmart Design Thinking Challenge 2021 was held from 9 October to 13 November 2021, involving 100 students from 20 schools in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor.
