Our Path to Zero Emissions
Decarbonising Aviation
We recognise the urgent need to decarbonise the aviation industry. PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad is at the forefront of this effort, aligning with international policies and initiatives such as the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
Sustainable Feedstock
Our SAF production relies on sustainably sourced feedstocks. We prioritise waste materials and non-food biomass to ensure minimal environmental impact and avoid competition with food resources. Our partnerships with key UCO (Used Cooking Oil) collection companies secure a steady supply of sustainable feedstock.
Technology Pathways
We are committed to exploring and developing advanced technology pathways to convert sustainable feedstocks into SAF. Our primary focus is on Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) pathway, and we are actively researching other promising pathways to ensure efficient production processes that meet the stringent requirements set by CORSIA.
HEFA
This well-established process uses waste oils and fats to produce jet fuel. The HEFA process is efficient and scalable, making it a cornerstone of SAF production.
Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ)
This pathway involves converting alcohols, such as ethanol, into jet fuel through chemical reactions. The AtJ process offers flexibility, as it can utilise a wide range of alcohol-based feedstocks.
Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis
Utilising biomass or waste materials, this process involves gasifying the feedstock and converting the resulting syngas into liquid fuels. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is highly versatile, allowing for the use of various feedstock types.
Gasification
Solid biomass is transformed into syngas, which is then processed into liquid fuels. This pathway is particularly effective for utilising waste materials, providing a sustainable solution for waste management.
Policies
We adhere to international and national policies aimed at reducing aviation emissions:
Paris Agreement
Commitment to limit global temperature increase to 2°C, with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) reviewed every five years.
CORSIA
The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation aims to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020. CORSIA relies on the use of carbon credits to offset emissions, implemented in phases from 2021 to 2035.
IATA Targets
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has set a target for the global air transport industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with SAF expected to contribute 65% of the required reduction.
Tailored Solutions
We offer customised SAF solutions designed to meet the unique needs of our aviation customers. Our team collaborates with airlines to develop and implement fuel strategies that align with their sustainability goals and operational requirements.
Offtake Agreements
We provide Offtake Agreements, securing future supplies of SAF for airlines. These agreements help airlines plan their long-term decarbonisation strategies and ensure a reliable supply of sustainable fuel. Key features of our Offtake Agreements include:
Flexible Pricing
Pricing is agreed upon entering specific Fuel Supply Agreements.
Volume Commitment
Volume requirements for production planning are prioritised.
Priority Access
Airlines with Offtake Agreements will be prioritised when SAF becomes available in 2027.
