PETRONAS DAGANGAN BERHAD, NESTLÉ AND JKJR JOIN FORCES TO CURB MICROSLEEP

Motorists are reminded to stay alert and hydrated when driving to fight fatigue.

Kuala Lumpur, 5 April 2018 – PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) today launched its Stay Alert, Stay Hydrated campaign, which offers beverage combo comprising a can of Nescafe and a bottle of mineral water at only RM3.50 in its efforts to promote road safety amongst motorists.

The campaign is carried out in collaboration with Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad and Road Safety Department Malaysia (JKJR) and is aimed at educating the public on the danger of microsleeping - brief, unintended episodes of loss of attention due to fatigue.

Speaking at the event, PDB’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Mohd Ibrahimnuddin Mohd Yunus said, “Dozing off behind the wheel is a common experience especially those who have to drive long hours. Through this campaign, we hope to remind motorists to always stay alert and hydrated by offering this combo beverage at a discounted price.”

“This initiative is in line with PDB’s commitment to promote road safety, which is one of our highest priorities being in the fuel retail business. For drivers who need a quick pitstop, they are always welcome to stop by any of our PETRONAS stations nationwide to rest and refresh themselves before they continue their journey,” he added.

Road accidents have been on a rise. According to a report by JKJR, number of accidents have increased over the years, from 200,000 cases in 1997 to over 500,000 cases in 2016. On average, these accidents have resulted in about 6,000 fatalities per year, while in 2016, the number has increased to over 7,000.

Elaborating further on the initiative, Kumaran Nowuram, Business Executive Officer, Nestlé Malaysia said, “Many accidents today are caused by a split second loss of focus due to fatigue especially on long drives. It is therefore important to take regular breaks during these drives to help us refresh and stay alert on the road.”

PDB’s collaboration with Nestlé and JKJR is a natural progression from their long-standing partnership in carrying out the annual Coffee Break campaign, which is PDB’s flagship road safety CSR programme held during festive season such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Kaamatan and Gawai Festival.

Similarly, the campaign is aimed at reminding motorists to take a break to freshen up at PETRONAS stations with complimentary coffee and snacks. In addition to Coffee Break, PDB also carries out the PETRONAS Streetsmart programme, targeting primary and secondary students to educate them on the importance of road safety.
