16. Can ATF Dextron 3 be used to top up Proton's manual transmission engine?

No.

ATF-D3 is mainly formulated for automatic transmission. It has different additive package compared with the one being used for manual transmission.

17. Can ATF XP/Dextron 3 be used for manual transmission top up?

No.

ATF XP/ Dextron 3 are mainly formulated for automatic transmission with different additive package used.

18. Can ATF XP be used in continental car?

Yes, if it is being used for power steering application.

No, if it is being used for automatic transmission.

19. Can ATF Dextron 3 be used in Japanese/Korean OEM cars?

Yes, if it is being used for Japanese/Korean OEM cars with less than 1.6 engine capacity.

No, if it is being used for Japanese/Korean OEM cars with more than 1.6 engine capacity.

20. I had to top-up frequently when using fully-synthetic based lubricant. Why?

In general, synthetic oil is suitable for new engine with smaller valve, for example, high performance Japan OEM engine. It enables lower grade oil like 0W30 to maximize engine power.

However, for older engine it is possible that the valve had expanded as a result of wear and tear. The habit of driving fast in a hot weather could exhibit higher fuel consumption and part of reason is the fuel being dissolved in oil sump and thus diluting the lubricant. Diluted lubricant could easily leak into the combustion chamber and get burnt together with the fuel.

Therefore, it is advisable to use higher viscosity oil grade such as Syntium 1000 15W50, Syntium 800 15W50 or Mach 5 20W50 for older engines.

21. Why synthetic oil is not recommended for older engines?

There are two main reasons why synthetic oil is not recommended for engines more than 5 years old;

The valve/chamber ‘tolerance/gap’ had widened. It could lead to a condition where lower viscosity oil grade leaking into the combustion chamber and got burnt and thus leading to the decrease in the volume of lubricant in oil sump.

The additive in synthetic oil has higher cleansing power. With this extra power, the dirt that previously acted as sealant would be washed away. This situation could cause ‘oil leakage’ and ‘power loss’ as a result from a condition known as ‘gas blowby’.

22. Is it true that the thickness of engine oil is a measurement of its performance?

No, it is not necessarily true. Good engine oil has less resistance to flow during cold engine “start-up”. It must also be viscous enough to provide engine protection during extremely hot condition. Therefore, multi-grade synthetic engine oil is an excellent guide to look for high performance engine oil.

23. How can I learn about the application, specifications and the quality of PETRONAS engine oil?

The information about engine oil could be obtained from the engine oil bottle.

The API standard and the SAE standard are written on the front side of the bottle, whereas all the information about the specifications, the safety and environment advice and the application guide are displayed on the back side of the bottle.

24. Why used engine oil is dark in colour?

Engine oil cleans the engine from carbon deposits and contaminants therefore the colour of the oil would eventually turned dark after being used for a long period of time.

25. How does engine oil with API SM prolongs exhaust life span?

Most modern automotive exhaust utilizes catalytic converter that functions to reduce the pollution rate coming from the combustion products.

Normal engine oil exhibits higher production rate of dust that would lead to the shortening of “catalytic lifespan”.

PETRONAS engine oils that exceed API SM standard are specially formulated with high technology additives that inhibit the production of dust to a minimum level.

26. Can PETRONAS SPRINTA 2T be used for marine two stroke petrol engine?

Yes.

Engine oil for marine two stroke petrol engine like being used in jet-ski utilizes 2T engine oil formulated specifically for this purpose. The 2T oil is considered environmental friendly as it reduces the amount of smokes and deposits. The specification required to achieve this is NMMA TC-W3. PETRONAS Outboard Special exceeds this standard.

27. Can PETRONAS ATF oil be used for power steering application?

Yes.

Most engine manufacturers had agreed that Dextron II standard is the basic oil standard for power steering application. If this standard is required, PETRONAS ATF-D is the most suitable candidate.

28. Is it really necessary to use flush oil?
  1. Yes for heavy duty equipment.
‘Flushing’ is highly recommended to wash away deposit and sludge.
  2. No for petrol engine or diesel engine.
For petrol and diesel engine, the requirement for ‘flushing’ is rather dubious. Based on our record, the best way is to change engine oil frequently so that deposits and “sludge” could not be formed.
29. Can engine oil become expired?

Yes, if the engine oil is contaminated.

If the seal is still in good condition and there is no sign of continuous exposure, engine oil could last for a very long time.

Nevertheless, after the seal is broken, it is recommended that the oil to be used immediately within 6 months from the time the seal was broken.

For metal cutting oil and insulating oil, this oil should be used within one year from the date it is manufactured.

30. Is it possible to measure the viscosity level by using fingers?

If you use fingers, you are actually trying to measure the thickness of the film and the smoothness of the engine oil.

However, this approach produces inaccurate results. In order to precisely measure viscosity level, a test on the sample oil must be conducted in an institutionally recognized laboratory.
